The Erasmus

The Erasmus Programme is an EU exchange student programme that has been in existence since the late 1980’s. Its purpose is to provide foreign exchange options for students from within the European Union and it involves many of the best universities and seats of learning on the continent.

How does the Erasmas Program work?

The programme is funded by many of the EU member nations and is aimed at cross-border cooperation between states to aid the growth of international studying, and with over 4000 students involved in the programme at any one time it offers an excellent chance of experience abroad.

Students can choose the length of time they spend abroad, with a minimum of three months recognised as the qualifying period, and the general idea behind Erasmus is to engender the sharing of languages throughout the EU states. It is a successful programme that is well used and popular.

With over 32,000 students, it offers a varied selection of possible degree courses at both Masters and Bachelor level, and it has been in existence in some form since the early 19th century. The wide variety of choice includes faculties for Arts, Law, Sciences and Medicine, Engineering, Economics and a variety of sciences. Ghent University is constantly ranked among the top 200 in the world and the top quarter in Europe, and is very well subscribed by both Belgian and foreign exchange students. Ghent University is one of the primary universities in the Low Countries and is a well-established and very much respected seat of learning.

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

Often shortened to K.U. Leuven, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is an institution that is well known for its dedication to research. It has been in existence since the 15th century and is situated centrally in Leuven. It is also the biggest university in Belgium, with over 35,000 students. The university is frequently cited as among the very best in Europe – easily within the top 20 – and is the highest ranked in the Low Countries, and is also regarded for its contribution to catholic theology. It is a very important institution in that respect, as most of the Belgian universities have no religious leaning. K.U. Leuven is one of the longest established universities in Europe and offers both Belgian and foreign students a seat of learning that is very popular, within an ancient and historic city.

Hogere Zeevaartschool

Hogere Zeevaartschool is the Antwerp Maritime Academy and it is dedicated to training the officers in the Belgian and Merchant navies. It teaches in both French and Dutch, and is unique in doing so. The college is divided into two sections, one covering nautical science and the other marine engineering, and as it is so specialised handles on 670 students each season. The academy is in the city of Antwerp which has a long history of maritime links, and has been home to the training of naval seamen since as long ago as the 14th century. This tradition continues at the Hogere Zeevaartschool where the standards are very strict, and very high indeed.

The Orpheus Instituut is a dedicated institute in Ghent, Belgium, specialising in post-graduate musicians, and has been providing post-graduate education for many years now. It is associated with four other Flemish colleges and is governed jointly by them. The Orpheus Institute is also involved in research into music on an international level, and is almost unique in this aspect. This popular and interesting institute may be specialised but it offers a high standard of education in the world of music, and has many past students who are a testament to its quality.

With over 7,000 students reading a wide variety of subjects it offers an excellent choice of possible degrees at several levels. Faculties include Architecture, Healthcare, Business Management and Music, as well as Social Work and Applied Linguistics among many others. With campuses spread across four locations the college is a cosmopolitan one that attracts many foreign students, the city of Antwerp being a major draw for many.

The French language Universite Libre de Bruxelles – translated as Brussels Free University – is home to 21,000 students, almost a third of who are from countries other than Belgium. Formed in the 1830’s and thriving ever since, it is one of the most popular institutions in the region. Within the college are a number of faculties, including those relating to the arts, physical education, work science and even a division dealing in astronomy and astrophysics. This gives the university one of the most varied choices in Europe, and especially one the most impressive in Belgium. Courses are available at both Bachelor and Masters levels, with a smaller quotient of complementary Masters level degrees.
